Why does my shoulder hurt when I do bench and how do I avoid injury?

Either your grip is too wide or you are swinging your elbows out (or both). Try bringing your grip closer together and keeping your elbows close to your sides. Also, make sure you warm up your shoulders before doing bench as an added precaution.

Why am I not gaining weight?

I asked one of my football trainers that same question during practice a few years ago. They were trying to bring me from 215 lbs. to 270 lbs. He said, "eat more." He was right. If you simply eat more calories than you consume, you will gain weight. If you eat healthy, it will be the right weight.

I am out of shape and want to get cut as well as build muscle. Shouldn't I lose all the fat off my abs before I start lifting heavy? I don't want to get too big.

As you put on more muscle, you will automatically begin to burn fat. Muscle speeds up your metabolism and, as you put on muscle, you will begin burning fat while just sitting at a desk. You can expedite that process by eating the right foods, drinking lots, of water, getting lots of sleep, and adding interval training to your lifts. Moreover, core lifts (i.e. squats, deadlifts, cleans, etc.-the lifts that nobody wants to do) will play a huge role in melting your fat off. Full-body workouts such as these are the best workouts you can do.
